With all of the potential problems that arise on a trip, you shouldn't have to sweat every time you open your wallet. So to keep your spirits up, as well as your checking account, here are five tips to help you save some big bucks.
1. Bring old clothes
If you plan on hitting the local boutiques looking for new clothes, pack your bags with inessential threads. Then instead of extra baggage or shipping costs you can just donate what you came with.
2. Cook for yourself
We know, one of the best parts about traveling is new places to eat. But replacing even just a couple meals with food you pick up at a grocery store will really pay off. Even a sandwich from the deli is cheaper than most restaurants.
3. Big breakfast, light dinner
If you can't bear to shop at the store for food, stuff yourself early. Spending more on breakfast and lunch will keep you from blowing major bucks at dinner, which is usually the most expensive meal. And you'll probably wake up feeling better.
4. Stay out of the city
Staying in the city is usually fun and easy. But the financial strain can keep you up at night. So why not snag a hotel out of the city and just drive in every day? Parking in a lot won't equal the cost of a hotel in downtown, and you'll probably find a nicer place for much cheaper.
5. Keep searching
Unless you've gotten non-refundable reservations, there's nothing stopping you from looking for better deals. It's always nice to book early, but if you have free time you may be pleasantly surprised by a something you can snag right before you leave.
